The IA2 antibody test is an important tool in the field of immunology, primarily associated with autoimmune diabetes. This test detects antibodies against the IA2 protein, which plays a critical role in pancreatic function.

Autoantibodies to IA2, a tyrosine phosphatase-like protein, are found in 50% to 75% of type 1 diabetics at and prior to disease onset. These autoantibodies are generally more prevalent in younger onset patients.

Autoantibodies against IA2 (IA2A) are detected in 50 to 70% of children and adolescents and in 30 to 50% of adults with newly diagnosed T1DM. In around half of patients, IA2A are detected prior to the manifestation of the disease.

Most useful to establish autoimmune etiology in previously diagnosed type 1 DM. Do not use to differentiate type 1 DM from type 2 DM, for most cases. Indicates whether a test has been approved by the New York State Department of Health. This test is New York state approved.

IA-2 is a 105,847 Da transmembrane protein that belongs to the protein tyrosine phosphatase family. Immunoperoxidase staining with antibody raised against IA-2 showed that this protein is expressed in human pancreatic islet cells.
