Riven of a Thousand Voices was originally considered the last living Ahamkara after the Great Ahamkara Hunt before the discovery of an uncorrupted clutch of her eggs; having formerly served Mara Sov and the Awoken as their greatest kept secret.

Some time after the Awoken arrived in the Solar System, Mara Sov asked her brother Uldren to go out into the system and find her a power “unknown to all the other powers of this world.” Uldren returned with a young Ahamkara. 1 The Ahamkara named itself Riven to honor the Awoken. 2 Mara was the only Awoken to establish a covenant with Riven.

After the events of The Taken King storyline, Savathun "took" Riven. This made Riven "evil by association" which is why we had to bust her up. That's a VERY minimal take on it.
