Ricklow Quarry is a site of Special Scientific Interest and contains some of the best outcrops of Gigantoproductus fossils in the UK

The disused Riddow Quarry is situated 1.5 km ESE of the village of Monyash, where Ricidow Dale joins Lathkill Dale [SK 165 662]. The site also includes exposures on either side of Ricklow Dale, to the north of the quarry, and on the northern side of Lathkill Dale [SK 169 660].

Apr 8, 2024 · The area around Lathkill Dale and Ricklow Quarry was originally formed in the Lower Carboniferous period and featured a V-shaped valley seen in figure 6, which was eroded by the river which previously ran through this valley.

Jun 12, 2023 · At the end of the dale, we then went to investigate the Ricklow Quarry, a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) that exposes a section through an outstanding example of a shelf developed reef, composed of carbonate mud mounds, which was fringed with crinoids and contains some of the UK’s best specimens of Gigantoproductus brachiopod fossils.

Jun 25, 2012 · Ricklow Quarry (2). This quarry is famous for its ‘figured marble’ a highly fossiliferous limestone consisting particularly of crinoids (fossil sea lilies) which polish to a decorative stone (white fossils on a darker background).

It has a sharp base overlying 1 m thick beds of fine-grained, wellsorted packstone–grainstone with peloids and bioclasts (foraminifers, •crinoid ossicles).

It’s a circular route then goes via the disused Ricklow Quarry and on a path above Lathkill Dale. As you walk along the edge, you’re treated a quieter path with spectacular views before descending into the dale itself.
