A rice-fish system is a rice polyculture, a practice that integrates rice agriculture with aquaculture, most commonly with freshwater fish. It is based on a mutually beneficial relationship between rice and fish in the same agroecosystem.

Rice-fish farming is the most widely distributed model geographically, occurring in the central, southern, southwestern, and eastern regions of China as well as in some areas of northeast China (Fig. 2). The rapid development of rice-fish farming models in recent years has narrowed the differences in production techniques across regions.
