May 22, 2023 · The ball is sitting on top of a bubbling sugar/water slurry that’s actually pretty bad at conducting heat because of all the gas in it. Plus, the ball “wastes” a lot of energy boiling off that slurry (which you can see in that big burst of steam), instead of usefully transferring it to the solid jawbreaker to keep melting through.
