Carnelian technically doesn’t have banding, agate does, but some people still call red agate carnelian. Agate is more regular in its banding, and does occur in the same color palette, indeed they are both Quartzes. So it can be a 6 of one / half a dozen of another situation. There are subtle differences in composition that can further clarify the differences, but a gemologist running tests on it could cost you $200.

May 7, 2022 · Probably dyed/heat treated, but might actually be agate. there are more real stones than fake in this pic. A lot of the lapis lazuli coming out of china is real, but lower quality that has been dyed. The turquoise stones are resin, and the opalite and blue goldstone are manmade.

Oct 29, 2023 · Yes, an agate is literally just a banded piece of Chalcedony, if you work all the banding off it’s just chalcedony, it is chalcedony, but it’s banded so it’s called agate. Agates don’t have to be translucent not even a little.
