Typically the total amount of contaminants present in greasy wool is around 35% to 40% of the total fleece weight. These contaminants need to be removed before the greasy wool can be processed and this is done by a process known as raw wool scouring.

Raw wool has natural, applied, and acquired impurities. These impurities vary from fleece to fleece and between wool types. The primary objective of woolscouring is to remove these impurities and present a clean, uniform product for subsequent processing. They are: Suint, which is mainly dried sweat and contains mainly potassium salts.

Raw wool scouring is typically carried out at temperatures below 140°F (60°C) with low cloud nonionic surfactants and/or anionic detergents sometimes in the presence of emulsified solvents.
