Apr 15, 2007 · Rats cannot vomit from their stomach, but they can regurgitate which is what they do when they are choking. A rat who is choking you may see them drooling, hunched over, and you can usually see them gag from time to time as they try to bring it up or down.

Due rat anatomy, actual choking is very rare. They might get a piece of food stuck in their throat sometimes and have trouble breathing, and show signs like gagging, opening its mouth wide and pulling its ears back. Unless it actually cannot breath anymore or is turning blue (feet, inside of mouth, very visible), DO NOT DO ANYTHING.

Apr 2, 2012 · Most chokes look like the rat is standing there rigid, and braced, they put their head down, pull their ears and eyes back and look like they are wretching. Occasinally you will see saliva, produced to facilitate the movement of the stuck food item.

If your rat appears to be choking the most likely cause is a piece of food or other substance stuck in her throat. This can cause gagging and drooling. A rat who is gagging will open her mouth wide and pull her ears back. As long as the rat can breathe, don’t do anything accept try to comfort her.

Feb 7, 2018 · And while rats rarely truly choke (i.e. can't breath), that doesn't mean they can clear everything no issue. I recently read a report on the fancyrat forum about a very similar case. After almost 3 hours of being unable to dislodge the item, the owners took the rat to the vet.
