We were privileged to have the senior Kapa Haka students from Raetihi School come to the Museum and perform their set from the 2023 Ruapehu Māori Culture Festival. We are happy to announce that the Museum is fully open!

The festival first began as Ruapehu Maori Culture Festival in 1993 at Raetihi School. This initiative was established, and organised by kaiako Colleen Hansen who yearned to give all educational sectors a platform to participate and celebrate Kapa Haka and nga mea Maori in a non-competitive environment.

Our Kapa Haka rōpū sang before the Kapa Haka and Te Reo me ōna Tikanga Māori awards were presented. ️

A celebration important to our community that showcases the unique aspects of our Māori culture in schools through Kapa haka and drama.

Silent Night, Come all ye Faithful, Hark the Herald Angels Sing sung along with some special Kapa Haka Waiata , 87 Raetihi Primary School's junior sung loud and clear for the town's seniors....

Kapa haka is the term for Māori action songs and the groups who perform them. The phrase translates to 'group' (kapa) 'dance' (haka). Kapa haka is an important avenue for Māori people to express and showcase their heritage and cultural Polynesian identity through song and dance.
