Southern Pacific's RSD5's, came in two varieties; branchline/switcher and road/helper service. Road/helper units were setup short hood forward, switchers long hood forward. In 1960, 21 RSD5's were traded back to ALCo to be rebuilt into RSD12's, (or DL-702) only the trucks and miscellaneous equipment was reused.

Aug 15, 2023 · Just 36 RSD-4s were built and Alco raced to fix the problem by introducing the RSD-5. The RSD-5 features a longer body to accommodate that GE GT566 main generator as well as minor improvements such as a 90,000-pound starting tractive effort and 100 more HP.

Atlas introduces its Kato-made ALCO RSD-4/5 in the spring of 1985. The first release included: Chesapeake & Ohio, Santa Fe, Southern Pacific, and Undecorated. The 1985 retail was $48 per unit.

Apr 7, 2021 · I purchased a new Atlas RSD-5 model, with the intent of replacing the new shell, fully louvered, with my old shell. The new chassis is almost identical in shape to the Stewart/Kato one that I had, so this swap does work.
