The RPK-74M (Modernizirovannij "Modernized") is an updated variant of the RPK-74 developed during the mid-'90s. In line with the AK-74M assault rifle variant, the RPK-74M lower handguard, gas tube cover, pistol grip, and new synthetic stock are made from a black, glass-filled polyamide .

The RPK-74M (GRAU Index: 6P39) is a Russian light machine gun developed from the AK-74M and RPK-74. The RPK-200 series are directly related to the RPK-74M, with the RPK-74M being the original RPK-200 model of the series.

RPK-74M. The RPK-74M is an improved model RPK-74 with the same features as the AK-74M. The wooden furniture has been replaced by a black plastic one. This makes it lighter than both RPK-74 and RPKS-74. A side mounted sight rail is fitted as standard and only a folding stock model is available.

I have found, though, that out to 300 meters, the RPK-74 puts the rounds onto silhouette targets intended to simulate an infantry squad. RPK-74M versions have the side rail for an optical sight, which helps a lot and allows the RPK-74 to reach out to at least 500 meters effectively.
