Based on this, the M35 appeared in 1951 as a simple stopgap replacement for worn out wartime GMC CCKW and M135 utility trucks. The M35 was designed by Reo based on the standard 2-1/2 ton tactical cargo truck. The final result was an improvement over the WW2 design, more capable, but still simple and reliable.

The M35 has had the widest range of bodies of any US truck.
