Dec 10, 2019 · In the west, the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta had been formed. The RNMWP was contracted by these provinces to take care of their policing. In 1912, we began to expand into northern Manitoba as well. As the First World War developed in Europe, there were concerns for our people here at home.

Many of the RNWMP members were recruited specifically for the Squadrons; and when they returned to Canada, were discharged as, "not being desirous of further service." It is doubtful one would ever be able to determine, with any amount of certainty, the exact number of members who served in each of the Squadrons.

As well as normal crime prevention work, the RCMP were responsible for intelligence and security. During the 1920s and 30s the chief target of intelligence activity was the Communist Party but in the years before World War II, the Fascists were also under surveillance.

During World War 1, the Dominion Police paid the Royal North-West Mounted Police to conduct federal policing in western Canada. On December 12, 1918, the government split federal policing duties between the Dominion Police and the Royal North-West Mounted Police. The Dominion Police kept its federal policing duties in eastern and central Canada.
