Rolls-Royce decided to offer an engine for every large civil airliner, based on a common core to lower development costs, and the three-shaft design provided flexibility, allowing each spool to be individually scaled.

This design permitted each compressor to run nearer its optimum speed and efficiency and reduced the number of blades and other parts required in the engine. The static thrust varied from 160 KN (36,000 pounds) to 245 KN (55,000 pounds). This RB211-22 engine powered the Lockheed L-1011 TriStar.

The Rolls-Royce RB 211 is a family of high-bypass turbofan engines made by Rolls-Royce and capable of generating 37,400 to 60,600 pounds-force (166 to 270 kilonewtons) thrust. Originally developed for the Lockheed L-1011 (TriStar), it entered service in 1972 and was the only engine to power this aircraft type.

Rolls Royce RB211-22 turbofan engine s/n 10006, 1970. Geoffrey Wilde (b 1917) was the originator of the RB211 which assisted the development of all Rolls-Royce's large engines. It was conceived due to the problems associated with noise and rising fuel costs.

The RB211-22B is quite an interesting engine and was one of the first generation of big turbo-fans designed and produced by Rolls-Royce to power the emerging market of wide-bodied jet airliners back in the 1970’s.
