Oct 26, 2016 · RAID1 implies two partitions each one with its header, so if one header got damaged (re-format partition), and the other partition header is correct, you can mount the other partition and acces on degraded mode and fix it (add another new partiton, delete the missing one, balance on RAID1 level)

Aug 20, 2021 · With mdadm, there is a migration path to go from raid1 to raid5. So all you need is a new drive, partition it accordingly, and then grow your existing raid. For 2 disks, mdadm's raid5 uses the same on-disk layout as raid1, so converting to raid5 (in name only) is instant: mdadm --grow /dev/md2 --level=5

Careful with that! with --metadata=1.2 (the new default), RAID metadata (1MB) will be inserted at the start (overriding the content there).

Without raid1 you would have to either reboot or swap-off the failed device and hope that only unimportant processes (with now unavailable paged-out memory) are terminated. Is this one advantage, and are there others?

The software raid automatically syncs the contents between the drives, so you always have the up-to-date data present. It is not difficult to retrieve the data from the drive, since raid1 is a mirror.
