The R62 is a New York City Subway car model built between 1983 and 1985 by Kawasaki Heavy Industries in Kobe, Japan, for the A Division. A total of 325 cars were built, originally as single units.

Jan 24, 2009 · All the cars that was involved in the wreck was 1431-1440. 1435, 1436, 1437, 1439, and 1440 were scrapped. everything else that survived (1431-1434 & 1438) was put into a 5-car set. now, 1438 is the only motor car in the R62 order that doesn't end in a 0, 1, 5, or 6.

The R62 was the first stainless steel and air-conditioned subway car built for the "A" Division. A graffiti-resistant glaze was applied to all of the cars because of the extensive graffiti tagging of nearly all of the subway cars in the system since 1971.

You know you're getting old when the cars that were new when you were young are now being retired. The 143s and 142s have 20 years of service already.

Apr 10, 2021 · In those days you avoided any 5xxx (R12-14-15) car since they were one step away from the scrap yard. The interior lights often didn't work and doors were often left locked out as well. Deliveries of new air conditioned R62 and R62A cars finally sent them to the scrappers.
