
R62 (New York City Subway car) - Wikipedia
The R62 is a New York City Subway car model built between 1983 and 1985 by Kawasaki Heavy Industries in Kobe, Japan, for the A Division. A total of 325 cars were built, originally as single units. When the reliability of the fleet improved, they were converted to five-car sets.

The R62As were a follow-up order to the R62 order from 1981, and the second order of stainless steel cars for the "A" Division. The contract had been given to Bombardier due to Kawasaki's refusal to build the additional cars under a separate order.

R62/R62A en R68/R68A Differences : r/nycrail - Reddit
Jun 2, 2021 · What are the differences between the R62/R62A and R68/R68A? They look identical to me. The R62s are from Kawasaki and tend to have rollsigns go straight across while the R62As were built by Bombardier and its rollsigns are stacked. With the R68s, they’re from Westinghouse, Jeumont Schneider & Alstom numbered 2500 and up.
What’s behind this door on every car of the R62/R62A?
Each side of the train used to be able to operate as a front. Now the 62, 62a and the 68,68a are formed into 4 car units and are combined to make 8 cars. 4 of the cars are connected by semi-perminant link bars (A dumb name I know). Short answer:A gutted operating position that doesn't function fully anymore. Thanks for sharing this!
