Along with Santos Mahogany (Myroxylon balsamum), Quina comprises a special genus of trees commonly referred to as called Balsamo which are used in the production of a substance called Balsam of Peru, used as a fragrance in perfumes.

Quina can range from a lighter golden brown to a darker purplish red or burgundy color. It's grain pattern is usually interlocked with a medium to fine texture and open, medium sized pores. It also has a very distinctive spicy scent when being worked with.

Quina colorada is a medium size tree, attaining heights of 10 to 30 m and diameters of 60. Logs lenght to 6mts, average diameter up to 40 cm. Timber with medium to fine texture, the grain varies from straight to irregular.

Quina ... Quinoa has a fair degree of color variation between boards ranging from a lighter golden brown to a darker purplish red or burgundy. The wood tends to turn more red/purple with age. The grain is usually interlocked and it has a medium to fine texture. The end grain is diffuse-porous. Quinoa is rated as very-durable in regard to decay.
