May 1, 2024 · According to studies conducted by the North American Breeding Bird Survey, a large-scale bird monitoring program, observations of northern bobwhite quail in Illinois declined dramatically over a fifty-year period. In surveys conducted on targeted tracts throughout the state, observers counted an average of 43.96 quail per survey route in 1970.
Quail hunting in Illinois was very popular for most of the early and mid-1900’s with well over 150,000 hunters. Harvest was estimated at over 2 million quail per year from the 1950’s through the early 1970’s.

The bobwhite quail is common in Illinois. The familiar "ah-bob-white" mating call of the male is heard in the spnng and summer. Other calls, whistles, and clucks are used when feeding, guiding the chicks, and when looking for one another after being scattered. The bobwhite quail is a short, plump bird about 10 Inches long, weighing 6 to 7 ounces.
