The Panzerkampfwagen IV (Pz.Kpfw. IV), commonly known as the Panzer IV, is a German medium tank developed in the late 1930s and used extensively during the Second World War. Its ordnance inventory designation was Sd.Kfz. 161.

However, it quickly became known as the Pz.Kpfw. IV (Sd.Kfz.161) in the new prewar nomenclature. Its engine was the gasoline Maybach HL 108TR, developing 250 hp, with a SGR 75 transmission coupled with a five forward, one reverse gearbox. Maximum speed on trials (on flat ground) was 31 km/h (19 mph).

Better armoured Panzer IVs were proposed due to their exceptional performance on the battlefield. This would result in the Panzer IV H variant being introduced. It was essentially the same vehicle as the Panzer IV G variant, with minor changes to simplify the manufacturing process and reduce production time.

With a new tank design not forthcoming, the army sought a stopgap measure. Its largest tank, the PzKw IV, would be re-fitted with a long-barreled 75mm gun.

The Pzkw IV, arguably one of the least innovative tanks in terms of technology innovations, was incredibly flexible and expandable. Of the many designs from the different countries involved, the Panzer IV was the only tank that was produced for the duration of the war.

Beginning in 1942, numerous modifications were made to the Panzer IV, in order to concentrate its use on anti-tank struggle. Thus, more than a dozen models are produced by German weapons industries.
