Chelone obliqua, commonly known as pink turtlehead or rose turtlehead, is a stiffly erect, clump-forming perennial that typically grows 2-3’ tall. It is native to moist woods, swampy areas, floodplains, alluvial forests and stream margins in parts of the Midwestern and Eastern U.S. from Minnesota to Virginia south to Mississippi and Florida.

It combines well with purple monkshood (Aconitum) and Shasta daisy ‘Becky’ and is a nice contrast with the dark foliage of Cotinus coggygria ‘Velvet Cloak’. Turtlehead is best grown in full sun in the Midwest but tolerates some shade. It prefers rich, moist to wet soil, although most types tolerate drier soil once established.
