Mar 3, 2025 · Ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction or pelviureteric junction (PUJ) obstruction partially obstructs the passage of urine from the renal pelvis to the ureter. It is the most frequent cause of hydronephrosis in the fetus and can also present in adulthood. Ureteropelvic junction obstruction on antenatal ultrasound affects about 1:500 fetuses.

IVU showed PUJO in 26 (37.1%) kidneys, whereas MRU showed it in 38 (54.2%) kidneys. MRU detected two duplex systems that were missed on IVU. A focal renal lesion and two incidental extra renal abnormalities were detected on MRU, which were not visualized on IVU.
