Saint Leo III (born, Rome—died June 12, 816, canonized 1673; feast day June 12) was the pope from 795 to 816. Leo was a cardinal when elected to succeed Pope Adrian I on December 26, 795; he was consecrated the next day.

Pope Leo III served as pope for over 20 years until his death of old age in 816 A.D. at age 66. The church buried him in an individual monument, but later moved his remains into a joint tomb for the first four pontiffs by the name of Leo.

With the letter informing Charlemagne that he had been unanimously elected pope, Leo sent him the keys of the confession of St. Peter, and the standard of the city. This he did to show that he regarded the Frankish king as the protector of the Holy See.
