Flowers are usually bright to medium red but orange-red, salmon, pink, yellow, or orange forms are also found. The flowers appear in clusters on the terminal ends of the branches. Masses of stamens extend from the flower and give the blossoms their characteristic pom-pom shape.

The powder puff like flowers are most often a shade of red, but yellow, orange, salmon, and pink forms are also found.

'Ōhi'a is our favorite native plant to grow. It can be a tree or shrub based on the genetics of the parent plant. We grow 'ōhi'a from seed which flower after a few years and are likely to bloom red and start off with multiple trunks.
