Jun 25, 2019 · Piety is the sixth of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, enumerated in Isaiah 11:2-3. Like all of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, piety is granted to those who are in a state of grace.

The gift of piety fosters the following spiritual dispositions: first, filial respect for God as a loving Father; second, a generous and childlike love, so that a person wants to please God, even if it means making sacrifices; and third, a loving obedience toward the teachings and commandments, respecting them as expressions of God’s love for us.

The Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit are Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety, and Fear of the Lord. They belong in their fullness to Christ, Son of David. They complete and perfect the virtues of those who receive them.

Piety is the only gift not part of Isaiah’s original list. Piety is personal holiness, the ability to live a decent life, free of sin, devoted to God, and obedient to God’s will. © 2011, Rev. Michael A. Van Sloun Used with permission.

The Gift of Piety is synonymous with of filial trust in God. [14] Through piety, a person shows reverence for God as a loving Father, and respect for others as children of God. Pope John Paul II defined piety as "the gift of reverence for what comes from God," and related it to his earlier lectures on the Theology of the Body. [ 15 ]

With the Gift of Piety the Holy Spirit moves us beyond the virtue of religion, the virtue of giving to God the honor and worship that is due to him as Creator and Lord. Piety is what empowers us to be like Jesus and call our Heavenly Father “Abba” – “Daddy.”

This gift helps us to approach God not out of fear, but out of a sincere desire to worship and honor Him. Piety makes our relationship with God personal and heartfelt, motivating us to pray, attend church, and live in a way that reflects our love for Him.

The gift of the Holy Spirit that perfects the acts of the infused virtues of religion and piety. By religion, one worships God as the Creator; the gift of piety moves the soul to venerate God as the Father of mankind.
