Phi X 174 - Wikipedia
The phi X 174 (or ΦX174) bacteriophage is a single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) virus that infects Escherichia coli. This virus was isolated in 1935 by Nicolas Bulgakov [1] in Félix d'Hérelle 's laboratory at the Pasteur Institute, from samples collected in Paris sewers.
19.3C: φX174 - Biology LibreTexts
φX174 (phiX174) is a virus that infects the bacterium E. coli. Hence φX174 is a bacteriophage. Each complete infectious particle (virion) of φX174 consists of a protein coat which envelopes a core that contains both protein and DNA. The coat of the virus contains 60 molecules each of two proteins (F and G) and 12 molecules of another protein (H).
Icosahedral bacteriophage ΦX174 forms a tail for DNA ... - Nature
Dec 15, 2013 · Here we show that the ΦX174 pilot protein H oligomerizes to form a tube whose function is most probably to deliver the DNA genome across the host’s periplasmic space to …
Bacteriophage Phi X 174 - an overview | ScienceDirect Topics
Due to its atypical characteristics, the study of bacteriophage (φ)X174, a member of the Microviridae, has had a profound influence on all biological subfields, from genetics to structural biology. Its single-stranded DNA genome challenged …
A high-resolution map of bacteriophage ϕX174 transcription
Aug 1, 2020 · Bacteriophage ϕX174 is a model virus for studies across the fields of structural biology, genetics, gut microbiomics, and synthetic biology, but did not have a high-resolution transcriptome until this work. In this study we used next-generation sequencing to measure the RNA produced from ϕX174 while infecting its host E. coli C.
Escherichia coli bacteriophage Phi X174 - 13706-B1 | ATCC
Escherichia coli bacteriophage Phi X174 is a viral strain that is propagated in Escherichia coli strain C (ATCC BAA-13706). This bacteriophage has applications in the detection of coliphages in water and in testing polyethylene films.

Bacteriophage PhiX174's ecological niche and the flexibility of its ...
To determine bacteriophage PhiX174's ecological niche, 783 Escherichia coli isolates were screened for susceptibility. Sensitive strains are diverse regarding their phylogenies and core lipopolysaccharides (LPS), but all have rough phenotypes.
The Evolution of Molecular Compatibility between Bacteriophage …
May 29, 2018 · Engineered to include codons with a lesser usage and/or tRNA abundance within the host, three different attenuated strains of the bacterial virus ФX174 were created and propagated via serial transfers. Molecular sequence data indicate that biosynthetic compatibility was recovered rapidly.
Phi X174 protein E-mediated lysis of Escherichia coli - PubMed
Bacteriophage PhiX174 encodes a single lysis gene, E, the function of which is necessary and sufficient to induce lysis of Escherichia coli.
