Re: 8 Phases of EMDR · 4/28/00 at 12:21 am ET I have a history of trauma and a few months ago had my first emdr session which didn't last long as I easily felt overwhelmed by the emotions and body memories which surfaced. Since then I have had 2 more emdr sessions, each lasting longer than the previous one.

EMDR-8 phases Christa · 11/21/00 at 10:03 PM ET I am researching EMDR for a class I am taking in my graduate program. I have learned a lot about it, yet am unclear about one thing. In two different areas of my research I read that EMDR consists of 8 phases. However, the resources did not specify what the 8 phases were.

I have a history of childhood and adult trauma (sexually abused by a previous therapist along with a series of devastating crisis). My present therapist is quite respectful of my need to move slowly and is not pushing me.

Aug 24, 2000 · An EMDR session to target a particular memory can take place over a number of (or many) therapy sessions as the 8 phases of EMDR are not that simple. One phase might take a number of therapy sessions, another phase a few more therapy sessions and so forth.

Earlier steps include evaluation, psychoeducation, treatment contracting, interventions to support safety, self-control, symptom management, and affect tolerance.

The advantage that the CBT treatments have is clarity: everyone knows that the preparatory phases are officially part of the treatment, so they're not considered "additional" to the treatment. So I don't think it's realistic to expect a "pure" EMDR treatment, because that would be clinically inappropriate and not reflective of the way that EMDR ...
