The Petlyakov Pe-8, a showcase of Soviet ingenuity, emerged in the late 1930s as a direct answer to the growing need for a long-range strategic bomber. As Europe edged closer to war, the Soviet Union recognized the importance of bolstering its aerial capabilities to project power beyond its borders.

After the death in 1942 of V.M. Petlyakov. one of the main leaders of the project "42" (TB-7), the TB-7 aircraft was renamed Pe-8. After the production of AM-35A engines was discontinued, Pe-8 bombers began to be equipped with M-82 air-cooled engines.
