SUNSTAR Periocline® Description: Sunstar Periocline 2%, Dental Ointment, contains a local therapeutic antibiotic agent which acts in the treatment of moderate to severe chronic adult periodontal disease.

Minocycline ointment, a semi-synthetic derivative of tetracycline, has a wide spectrum of action against anaerobic as well as aerobic bacteria. Various clinical studies done by Kurimoto K and Colleagues in Japan lead to approval of minocycline hydrochloride formulation under the name Periocline (Sunstar) in August 1990 .

Ointment: Dentomycin ® (Lederle Dental Division, Gosport, Hampshire, UK) and Periocline ® (Sunstar, Osaka, Japan) are both biodegradable minocycline 0.5 mg ointments consisting of 2% minocycline hydrochloride (10 mg minocycline) in a matrix of hydroxyethyl cellulose, aminoalkyl methacrylate, triacetine, and glycerine.

Periocline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic with a potent inhibitory effect on a range of periodontal pathogens, mainly Porphyromonas gingivalis, and is more convenient as a topical extended-release drug that is administered via a single injectable syringe directly to the base of the periodontal pocket and does not require multiple doses.

Administration of the local drug delivery system of Periocline ointment as the auxiliary treatment of severe chronic Periodontitis could get good clinical results.
