The University of Peradeniya is heir to the University of Ceylon which was established in 1942. It is the largest and best-endowed university in Sri Lanka. It has eight faculties (schools) and 72 academic departments, an undergraduate enrolment of approximately 9000 and a postgraduate enrolment of approximately 2000.

The University of Peradeniya is the heir to a seventy year old University tradition which commenced with the inception of the University of Ceylon, the first institution of its kind established in Colombo on 1 July 1942. It moved to the banks of Mahaweli River, the longest in the Country, in 1952.

University of Peradeniya, the oldest, largest and most comprehensive university with nine faculties catering to nearly 14000 undergraduates and over 6000 postgraduates has been ranked number one in the country by the Times Higher Education Rankings over the last four consecutive years.

In addition to the internal degree programmes, the Faculty offers the BBA (Online) degree program which is the only online degree awarded by the University of Peradeniya and the Diploma in Management & Development programme through the Centre for Distance & Continuing Education (CDCE) of the University of Peradeniya.

The Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya is the first engineering faculty in Sri Lanka. It was founded in 1950 and shifted to the present location at Peradeniya in 1964.
