May 9, 2011 · The basic difference is that a pentaprism is a solid block of glass. This means it's fairly heavy. Light enters one side, gets reflected around inside, and then comes out one other side. This means there are only 2 air/glass interfaces involved: one where light enters the prism, and one where it leaves the prism. This keeps light loss to a minimum.

However, it seems to me that it would be possible to project an image to the viewfinder simply by using two mirrors, the upper one at a complementary angle to the lower one, much like a simple periscope.

The big advantage of a pentaprism is that it is bigger, brighter and gives better coverage of the area of the sensor, so you have a better idea what you are shooting, particularly in low light. It's also helpful when trying to estimate depth of field since stopping down the aperture greatly reduces the amount of light getting in.

A pentaprism is higher quality and brighter, but more expensive and heavier.

After the "cleaning" I looked again and the viewfinder was even dirtier, now with small translucent fragments, and the original dust still there.
