Lasers and tac-lights have obvious downsides during daylight but until recently there hasn't been a good way of mounting a pen flare so it could be used while maintaining your firing hand on the trigger.

There are numerous companies that make pen flares for civilians and mil, and if you can place an order for thousands (or tens of thousands) of them, you can get the same ones the mil are using.

They are also supposed to be regulated by the ATF and covered under the National Firearms Act: Any Other Weapons: Pen Guns. I would check firearms regulations both with the ATF and your state before I go showing that thing around too much.

Sep 29, 2014 · Still have the pen flare set I was issued in the early nineties. Only have five flares for it though Packed in 1969 and still fired last time I tried maybe five yrs ago. The used cartridges can be turned into noise makers by knocking out the primer and replacing ( shot shell primer).

Jul 29, 2011 · The pen flare looks like the same ones that were carried on C-130s at Littlerock. I had to go to a 130 crash (turned out it was the one my wife used to take care of) and there were items like that all over the area. I'm not sure if it had the clip on it or not.

Oct 17, 2010 · I even picked up a genuine issue pen flare gun complete with the MK 80 pen flares in their original bandoleer's. Every time I found these at the tables that looked like the contents of a gun nut's junk drawer. You have to just spend time looking through these guys stuff. Its time consuming, but at the time I was on a quest to find pen flares.

Apr 7, 2004 · As for the pen flare, it is very small and very short lived. One flare may or may not be sufficient. In a word -- IMHO the pen-flare sucks. If you want signalling devices get some that work. I believe that the original premise was that these were for use on a small body of water.
