A peaviner is an agricultural machine used to separate freshly harvested peas from their vines. Before its invention, farmers had to shell their harvested peas all by hand. This monotonous process consumed a great deal of time and energy, which most likely impeded upon other scheduled tasks.

Before the FMC pea combine farmers harvested peas with a sickle mower and loaded the peas by pitch fork into a wagon or truck and hauled the pea vines to a stationary pea viner. The pea viner would shell the peas for canning. The old method added extra labor and risked the freshness of the peas.

John Alexander Chisholm (1859–1903) was a Canadian inventor and businessman who developed the Chisholm-Scott Pea Viner, an agricultural machine for shelling peas. He sold these machines throughout Canada and the United States through the Chisholm-Scott Company.
