Pavement Grooving. Pavement grooving is a pavement countermeasure technique to apply longitudinal or transverse cuts onto the pavement surface to increase or restore pavement friction. This is used on concrete pavements and is especially effective in reducing wet-weather crashes by improving the drainage characteristics of the pavement.

Concrete diamond grinding removes roadway imperfections caused by construction and/or heavy usage. The immediate result is an improvement in pavement smoothness, surface texture, skid resistance, safety, and noise reduction. This service can also be applied to asphalt pavement.

Diamond grooving is a surface restoration procedure which can be performed on both PCC and hot-mix asphalt pavements. This procedure involves the use of diamond saw blades with a typical spacing of 3⁄4 inch (19 mm) on centers to cut parallel grooves into the pavement surface.

Results show that pavement grooving parallel to the centerline will reduce the wet weather accident rate in low friction value areas of PCC pavements. Friction value Is raised following grooving. Wear and polish of grooved areas appear to depend on characteristics of the pavement.

Grooving—cutting narrow, discrete grooves into the pavement surface—provides significant macrotexure and helps tires resist hydroplaning by moving water out of the tire contact patch area. Statistics show a clear relationship between longitudinally grooved surfaces and a reduction in accident rates.
