In bony fish, the palatine bone consists of the perpendicular plate only, lying on the inner edge of the maxilla. The lower surface of the bone may bear several teeth, forming a second row behind those of the maxilla; in many cases, these are actually larger than the maxillary teeth.

In morphology, a paired lateral bone above the mouth lying between the vomer and maxillary; the presence or absence of teeth on the palatine is a defining character in the classification of some fishes. Also known as autopalatine.

The articulation of the palatine bone in gadoid fishes has been thought of as a specialization of that group. It is shown that there are, in fact, three principal types of articulation, two of which are shared with other gadiform groups.
