One of two routes starting from Pen y Pass, the Pyg Track is a rocky and difficult path with several steep climbs. While the Pyg track is one of the shortest routes up Yr Wyddfa, it is also one of the most rugged and challenging routes to the summit.

Path summary. The Pyg Track (Llwybr Pyg) is the shortest route to the summit, and because it starts at a height of 359 m (1,188 ft) the total ascent is just 723 m (2,372 feet). ‘Pyg’ (or ‘PYG’) is pronounced ‘pig’.

The Pyg/Miners circular walk is one of the classic Snowdon ascent routes and probably the most popular. It usually involves ascending via the Pyg Track and then returning along the Miners’ Track. The total distance is 7.4 miles (11.9km) and you should allow 6-7 hours.

The Pyg Track, also known as the classic route, the Pyg Trail or the Pyg Path is the most popular option for those who would like to summit the tallest peak in Wales. It’s a simple route to follow as it’s well maintained and a frequently trodden path.

The Pyg Track is around 6.7 miles (10.8km) there and back. All Snowdon paths take roughly the same time with a faster walker being able to get up and down in around four hours but for most people, allow six or slightly longer if you’re walking with young children or in poor weather.

The Pyg Track is a rugged but popular route to the summit of Snowdon. It’s not the easiest or safest route but it’s not the most difficult either. I put this route firmly in the middle; the Llanberis Path and the Ranger Path are shallower and more forgiving and the Watkin Path and Crib Goch routes are steeper, looser and more scrambly.

The Pyg Track is one of six trails you can take to the top of Snowdon. The others are: the Llanberis Path, Miners’ Track, Watkin Path, Rhyd-Ddu Path and the Snowdon Ranger Path.
