During World War II, Lieutenant Commander Quinton McHale (Borgnine) is the commanding officer of the U.S. Navy PT boat PT-73, stationed at the fictional Pacific island base of Taratupa. In the late spring of 1942, the Japanese heavily bomb the island, destroying the base.

The PT-73 replica was built to be as authentic as possible. It was 77 feet long, just like the real PT-73, and had a top speed of 43 knots.

Nov 19, 2010 · The real PT-73 was a 78-foot Higgins boat assigned to Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 13, which saw service in the Aleutians and in the Southwest Pacific theater. On 15 January, 1945 it ran aground, and was destroyed to prevent it falling into enemy hands.

PT-73 under the command of Lt(jg) William R. McQuilkin and PT-75 had delivered supplies to the Mindoro guerrillas at Abra de Ilog and taken their leader aboard for the night's patrol. Close off Lubang Island, N.W. of Mindoro, PT-73 ran hard aground on an uncharted reef.

Built by Higgins Industries in New Orleans, LA. Laid down December 25, 1941 as 78' Higgins Motor Torpedo Boat. Launched July 24, 1942 as PT-73. Completed August 12, 1942 and assigned to the U.S. Navy (USN). Assigned to Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron Thirteen (MTBRon 13).
