A Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA) is an area of the marine environment that needs special protection through action by the International Maritime Organization (IMO)

This layer shows the IMO marine pollution prevention measures under International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) including special areas and particularly sensitive sea areas (PSSA).

1.1 The area covers the Western coasts of the United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium, France, Spain and Portugal, from the Shetland Islands in the North to Cape S. Vicente in the South, and the English Channel and its approaches, as shown in the map below.

The key details of every PSSA are provided in annex 2 to this circular. It may be noted that the annex also contains information on the proposing State(s), the APMs and the date of the MEPC resolutions designating the PSSAs.
