In the early 1920s, Pennsy was looking for a more advanced electric locomotive to replace their DD1s in mainline service. Their solution was the L5, the last of their jackshaft and siderod electrics. The L5 was designed to be convertible between catenary and 3rd rail, and AC and DC power. As a result, no two engines were quite alike.
