Class A was the 0-4-0 type, an arrangement best suited to small switcher locomotives (known as "shifters" in PRR parlance). Most railroads abandoned the 0-4-0 after the 1920s, but the PRR kept it for use on small industrial branches, especially those with street trackage and tight turns.

This document intends to point out the spotting features across the various models and phases. There were 1807 F3/F5 units built, of which the PRR purchased 146 (8%).

Nov 16, 2005 · The class F3 Mogul such as the #839 was built by Baldwin in 1901 and used the round-top or radial-stay firebox. I believe they all were standard gauge and used in regular freight service.
All PRR “F” units were 1500 HP engines. They all had dynamic brakes. The original units were delivered without antennas. Radio telephone antennas were added in 1947‐1948 and were removed in 1965 when they were replaced with standard radios.

Jan 22, 2005 · Seeing that in January 1966 the PRR had 136 inoperable road freight units (this included streamlined freight cab/booster units and low-nose high horsepower B-B and C-C units) I wonder if, by the 1967 date, the F3 units were still out on the road. The remaining F3 cab units were in the series 1402-1425; no data on which 15 of these remained.

For instance, an EF15 classification for an F3 unit designates it as built by EMD (E), used in freight service (F) and rated for 1500 horsepower (15).
