
Pennsylvania Railroad class L1 - Wikipedia
Pennsylvania Railroad Class L1s were 2-8-2 "Mikado"-type steam locomotives that were used on the Pennsylvania Railroad during the early twentieth century. These 574 locomotives were manufactured between 1914 and 1919 by the railroad's own Juniata Shops (344 examples) as well as the Baldwin Locomotive Works (205) and the Lima Locomotive Works (25).

After World War I, the Pennsylvania Railroad needed a lighter 2-8-2 type steam locomotive to handle lighter freight trains on the system. In 1919, 38 locomotives (GR&I 106-112 and PRR 2006-2038) were purchased while the railroad was under USRA control.

There is one surviving PRR Class L1 2-8-2 locomotive. It is number 520 that is now on display at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg, PA. USRA allocated "Mikado-Light" locomotives.

Mallets with a 2-8-8-2 wheel arrangement were a familiar sight on the Norfolk & Western Railroad. The Y3 models were built in 1919 by ALCO and Baldwin and were used to haul long coal trains over mountainous terrain.

Feb 2, 2003 · Class HH: 2-8-8-2. HH1: During World War 2 the PRR was desperately short of motive power, and it leaned on the Norfolk and Western, of which the PRR owned 40%, to give some locomotives. All the N&W had to spare were six 1919-vintage USRA 2-8-8-2 locomotives, N&W class Y-3. They served until about 1947.
