9700 is a paint code for PPG (Pittsburgh Plate Glass) who has been providing automotive paints since 1924 (originally Ditzler Color Company subsidiary acquired in 1928). PPG/Ditzler codes in the 9000 to 9999 range were used on new paint formulations from the late 1930's to 1968 in the general shade of black.

Jul 3, 2014 · I was talking to the local paint supply person today about PPG Black paint (9700) and was told that they could provide a better paint and save me money. They stated that it's the same Black paint (9700) or base that comes from PPG, but already mixed and ready to paint; they called it Deep Base Coat Black (think that's correct name given).

Aug 6, 2008 · Just got some DBC base coat from the store and it was mixed to match a 2003 Onyx black GMC pickup (no metalic). In the mixing instructions the P sheet designates a less reduced mix for 9700. Does anyone know if standard black base is also reduced different.
