However, not much information has been published about P.38 grips. This article is a good starting point in understanding a little bit more about P.38 grip variations and their use in WWII era pistols.

First variation guns are in the 01-035 serial number range and will have the pre-1940 "lazy" c/n proof. Very few examples are known to exist. All small parts are hand fitted and numbered to the gun like the famous German Luger.

Feb 16, 2024 · Mauser continued to produce P.38's and did not adapt to starting serial numbers over again when the year changed. The first variation of these guns with byf 43 slides will be the same as guns with byf 42 slides but no e/135 parts. The serial number range is 4958a-2119f with 50,000 produced.

The East German AB9 guns are among the rarest of all P.38 variations. They were newly manufactured, post war, possibly as a test in the "tooling up" process for large scale production.
