The North American Rockwell OV-10 Bronco is an American twin-turboprop light attack and observation aircraft. It was developed in the 1960s as a special aircraft for counter-insurgency (COIN) combat, and one of its primary missions was as a forward air control (FAC) aircraft.

Dec 7, 2023 · The Rockwell OV-10 Bronco was a versatile aircraft designed for various military roles, including counter-insurgency, observation, and attack. The US Marine Corps wanted a durable plane that could operate on roads as runways and stay in the air without refueling.

In response to the USMC’s requests, the unique OV-10 Bronco design submitted by the North American (Rockwell) company proved to be as adaptable as the changing times. Seven prototypes were produced in 1964, and on the 16th of July 1965, the first OV-10 took wing.

It would be able to operate off rough forward airstrips, with a loaded takeoff run of 360 meters (800 feet); have a maximum speed of 565 KPH (350 MPH); be able to loiter over a combat area for an hour at a maximum radius of 80 kilometers (50 miles); and fly safely on a single engine.

OV-10D - The second generation Bronco developed by the U.S. Marine Corps. It was an extensively modified A model airframe. The D added a powerful Forward-Looking Infrared night-vision system with a camera mounted in a turret under an extended nose. It is easy to differentiate a D model from an A.

In addition to 4 M60C 7.62mm machine guns, the OV-10A could carry 2175 kg of weapons on 7 external pylons, including rocket or missile pods, bombs, and cannons. The OV-10D version was more focused on surveillance missions and night attack capabilities with FLIR sensors and a M-197 20mm cannon linked to the targeting system.
