It was one of the grenades encountered by Australian forces when engaging Italian forces in the Western Desert during the Second World War.

The OTO Model 35 grenades had a combination of ribbed and smooth bodies and were each filled with 2.5 ounces of TNT. The explosives were detonated on impact.
