The most widely used volumetric burettes are those employed in Orsat instruments; these are basically modified Hempel burettes. The burette consists of a glass graduated cylinder with a volume of 100 ml, with various shapes depending on the expected percent contents of the individual components of the analytical mixture.

The apparatus consists essentially of a calibrated water-jacketed gas burette connected by glass capillary tubing to two or three absorption pipettes containing chemical solutions that absorb the gases it is required to measure.

The Orsat Analyzer Train is designed specifically for Method 3, for analysis of integrated or grab bag samples collected in Tedlar bags. A liquid filled leveling bottle moves the integrated sample through a graduated glass burette and absorption pipettes containing absorbing reagents.
