May 8, 2018 · It has been estimated that different species of ancient sea reptiles were fossilized in these areas along with dinosaurs around 65 million years ago. The opal shells are primarily found by “gougers”, a name for miners that work in these mines to find the most valuable opals.

This fossil sea shell has been perfectly opalised it comes from Coober Pedy in South Australia. The fossil has been cut on one side showing the wonderful play of colour.the other side shows the original shell.

Opalised snails and mussel shells are found on most Australian opal fields, because snails and mussels live in both marine and freshwater environments. Every single opalised fossil found is considered a national treasure.

The bottom of the shell has a small window showing really nice green crystal opal while the top side has prominent striations looking like it came straight off the beach! Weight 67ct.
