Most common OPA and NPA sizes? - EMTLIFE
Oct 1, 2010 · Hello, quick question. I once read a thread somewhere, maybe here, maybe another forum, which mentiomed that certain sizes are most common and can be quick go-to numbers to grab. Hopefully someone can share that knowledge with me since I can't remember, and I'd like to know as a reference. Sorry if my spelling is off, typing n my phone.
OPAs aren't sterile? | EMTLIFE
Mar 29, 2016 · If OPA insertion was to be sterile, you'd have to scrub, don a cap, mask, surgical gloves, use aseptic technique throughout, prep the mouth with betadine, etc. "The Law of Inverse Value: the less you contribute to society, the greater the trauma you can sustain with minimal to no physical sequelae"

Mar 10, 2005 · Doing a complete check of these ambulances does take about an hour-- because it involved taking every thing out, checking at least six different types of kits-- birth, IV, biohazard, mass casualty, terrorist attack, unstable building, not including our "ambu bag" with BVM, foot suction, BP cuff, cardiopump (the plunger), six different OPA sizes ...
OPA or NPA? | EMTLIFE
Oct 27, 2014 · I'll go for an OPA first. It does a better job at holding the tongue out of the way. However it offers zero protection from aspiration. If the patient accepts the OPA then the patient is pretty much going to get intubated (unless there is an easily reversible cause for the ALOC). If the patient has a gag reflex then I'll probably toss in a NPA.
OPA with overdose? | EMTLIFE

I have seen patients brought in with an OPA and on a NRBM without anybody watching the airway and the mouth full of vomit. If you are using an OPA and/or the BVM, you should have suction nearby, really nearby.

Clearing up OPA and NPA use - EMTLIFE
Dec 3, 2009 · Inserting an OPA or NPA is certainly a noxious stimulant, and in many cases an inhumane way to measure level of responsiveness. Please dont try to shove them down the airway of every AMS you see, it ends poorly for all involved.
NPA or OPA | EMTLIFE
Feb 3, 2011 · haha agreed. No. If my patient is unresponsive. And has snoring respirations then yes OPA all the way. I don't think you should rely on it all the time though. It's just an adjunct not a cure all. And if I suspect a skull fracture or other facial trauma I'm not gonna use an NPA. Just in case. On another note...
