The R42 was a New York City Subway car model built by the St. Louis Car Company between 1969 and 1970 for the IND / BMT B Division. There were 400 cars in the R42 fleet, numbered 4550–4949.

First R-42s in service, May 9, 1969 (in a mixed train on the Sea Beach line). New York Transit Museum collection. Part of "Train of Many Metals" fleet. Collided with "D" train, 59th Street, 3/5/1971. Repaired at 207th Street shop and returned to service. Bumper block overshoot at Chambers Street, 11/6/2007.

This Wednesday, February 12th, R-42 subway cars will make their final trip, ending more than 50 years of service in New York City. Please join us to say farewell to this historic fleet. Feb 10, 2020 · The new cars were recalled for repairs and the old reliable R-42s were again pressed into service; on a recent visit to Woodhaven on January 9, 2020, I was lucky enough to snag an R-42 consist on the way back to Manhattan.

MTA New York City Transit retired the last remaining R42 subway cars from service on Feb. 12, 2020, ending a 51-year run that began in May 1969. The cars have been used on all NYCT B Division lines, each accumulating more than seven million service miles.
