In Celtic cultures, a bard is an oral repository and professional story teller, verse-maker, music composer, oral historian and genealogist, employed by a patron (such as a monarch or chieftain) to commemorate one or more of the patron's ancestors and to praise the patron's own activities.

Shakespeare is called “the bard” specifically because David Garrick, a successful actor and theatrical producer in 18th century England, wrote a poem that repeatedly described Shakespeare as a “bard.”

Bard, known also as Bard the Bowman and Bard I, was a Man of Lake-town, the slayer of the dragon Smaug, and founder and first king of the renewed kingdom of Dale. He was succeeded as King of Dale by his son, Bain.

Medieval Bards were considered to be of a distinct class and were given hereditary privileges, especially during the middle ages. According to historians, there were three different types of medieval bards. Medieval bards maintained high esteem throughout Ireland and Wales.
